Cost-of-Living Reduction Measures

 

Under a funding agreement signed with the Québec government in 2007 for three years that was renewed in 2010 and in 2011 for one additional year each time, the Makivik Corporation and the Kativik Regional Government are implementing six innovative measures to help reduce the high cost of living faced by Nunavimmiut.

 

The six cost-of-living reduction measures are the:

 

·         Food Program

·         Transportation Subsidy Program

·         Support for Inuit Harvesting Activities

·         Gasoline Subsidy Program

·         Airfare Reduction Program

·         Elders’ Assistance

 

The funding for these innovative measures put forward by the Kativik Regional Government and the Makivik Corporation are paid for through an agreement with the Québec government. As a result, these measures may be modified or suspended at any time. As the manager for this funding, the KRG closely monitors all six cost-of-living reduction measures to ensure that costs do not exceed the available funding.
