General Information

The spirit of Section 29 of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement, concerning Inuit economic and social development, is inextricably woven into the mission of the Sustainable Employment Department. In particular, this mission has progressively led the Department since 1992 to assume responsibility for related federal and provincial government programs. The Department’s activities are divided into three sections:

  • Income support.
  • Childcare.
  • Employment and training.

Funding for the Department’s operations and activities is received through agreements with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The Québec government contributes to the Department’s activities through the Partnership Agreement on Economic and Community Development in Nunavik (Sanarrutik Agreement) and the Agreement concerning Block Funding for the Kativik Regional Government (Sivunirmut Agreement).
