General Information
The primary mandate of the Municipal Public Works Department is to assist the communities to secure the infrastructure necessary for their development, to help maintain this infrastructure in good working order and, if necessary, to carry out upgrades. All the Department’s activities in this respect are performed in close co-operation with the Northern villages. In fact, the active participation of the Northern villages is an essential part of the Department’s activities.
The Municipal Public Works Department oversees the implementation of several programs and projects under agreements with the governments, including the Isurruutiit Program for municipal infrastructure improvements, the Gasoline Excise Tax and Québec Contribution Program, the Pivaliutiit Program for community infrastructure development, the Technical Assistance Program, the Sports and Recreational Facilities Support Program, and the Road Paving Project. The Department also manages various agreements and many construction projects on behalf of the Québec government, the KRG and the Northern villages.
Funding for the Department is drawn from project management fees charged by the KRG under various agreement’s concerning the programs and projects listed above, including the Agreement concerning Block Funding for the Kativik Regional Government (Sivunirmut Agreement).
