General Information
The region’s population is characterized by its young age and constant growth. In this context, the Recreation Department plays an important role, promoting healthy and active living, as well as providing varied sports and recreation opportunities. This goal is fulfilled in two main ways. First, the Department delivers technical assistance to organizers and coaches in every community. Secondly, it implements a number of region-wide programs. The most important of these are the Arctic Winter Games, Cirqiniq Program and the Nunavik Summer Camp Funding Program.
The Department receives funding for its core operations and activities through the Agreement concerning Block Funding for the Kativik Regional Government (Sivunirmut Agreement). Additional funding may also be received for special programs from the Ungaluk Program for safer communities, the KRG Employment, Training, Income Support and Childcare Department, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services, the Saputiit Youth Association and the ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (education, recreation and sports).
