Policing and Prevention

Currently, regional policing services are funded under two agreements: a tripartite agreement between the KRG and the governments of Canada and Québec, and a bilateral agreement between the KRG and Québec. As well, additional funding for crime prevention activities and to counter drug and alcohol use is received through the Ungaluk Program for safer communities.

As a direct result of improved workplace organization and enhanced funding, trained constables are staying with the Kativik Regional Police Force (KRPF) longer than in recent years, leading to a more stable workforce. As well, the Nunavik Investigation Unit began operations in 2009. The Unit consists of six officers ― two members of the KRPF and four members of the Sûreté du Québec (provincial police). Its main roles are to fight crime against persons (especially involving serious crimes of a sexual nature and serious assaults) as well as to investigate drug trafficking and bootlegging.

The KRPF carries out a number of crime prevention activities under a comprehensive strategy to fight drug and alcohol abuse. The strategy has two vital underpinnings: effective prevention and treatment activities that make coordinated use of all available regional resources. Other prevention activities specifically target youth (such as Nanuk the KRPF mascot and school bus safety) and impaired driving.
