Municipal Technical Assistance

Pursuant to the Agreement concerning Block Funding for the Kativik Regional Government (Sivunirmut Agreement), the KRG is responsible for delivering technical assistance to the Northern villages in several fields, specifically legal affairs, management and municipal accounting, land use planning and development of the territory, as well as engineering. The Department is responsible for the engineering component of the Program, namely infrastructure construction and drinking water. Technical assistance is one of the Department’s priorities given ever increasing needs and ageing infrastructure.

Infrastructure construction
The Department assists the Northern villages with the purchasing, construction and renovation of infrastructure that is not covered under existing financial assistance programs managed by the KRG.

Drinking water
The Department assists the Northern villages with the management of local drinking water supply, treatment and distribution infrastructure. A project manager, assigned to help local plant operators, carries out weekly monitoring although the Northern villages remain responsible for the quality of the drinking water delivered to their residents.

Vehicle fleets
The Department continued to assist the Northern villages with the management of their vehicle fleets in cooperation with the KRG Transportation Department, not through direct actions but by supporting municipal managers with parts purchasing and the hiring of mechanics.
