Nunavik Karate Program

The Nunavik Karate Program, also known as the Sustainable Martial Arts Recreational Training (SMART) Program, was launched in 2010 to promote karate activities for youth in the region’s different communities. Coordinated by the KRG Recreation Department, the Program aims to provide support to local trainers and help them to develop as role models. Local trainers in participating communities are responsible for maintaining an environment in their dojo (karate school) that instils self-confidence in youth participants and fosters positive lifestyle choices.

An important component of the SMART Program is the development of local trainers to deliver regular karate activities for youth. Karate skills and teaching methods training for local trainers are organized four times annually in Nunavik as well as during special training events and tournaments outside the region.
