Transportation Department

In 1996, the KRG created the Transportation Department to co-ordinate local and regional transport issues. Pursuant to their act of incorporation, both the Northern villages and the KRG have jurisdiction over different aspects of land, air and water transportation.

Specifically, to support Northern villages with their transportation priorities, the Department co-ordinates local para-transit services for elders and people with disabilities, and provides technical advice for emergency preparedness at all local airports.

On a regional level, the Department has the monumental responsibility of managing, operating and maintaining the airports in each of Nunavik’s 14 communities in accordance with applicable federal and provincial laws and regulations. In this manner, the Department is central to ensuring the safety of travellers in the region.
