The Recreation Department delivers recreational programming for all Nunavimmiut, but especially for young people. It promotes healthy and active living while encouraging participation in different sports and recreation opportunities. The Department’s goals are pursued locally with the northern villages and regionally through programs such as the Cirqiniq Program, the Nunavik Kite-Ski Program, and the Nunavik Rocks Music Program, as well as through Team Nunavik–Québec’s participation at the Arctic Winter Games.
The Department receives funding for its core operations and most of its activities through the Agreement concerning Block Funding for the Kativik Regional Government (Sivunirmut Agreement). Additional funding is also received from the KRG Sustainable Employment Department, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS), the Canada Council for the Arts, and various sponsors for Team Nunavik–Québec’s preparations for the Arctic Winter Games.
